The Powerful Act of Kindness

I hope everyone has experience of Kindness as I think it is possibly a human ‘Super Power’. It is the action that just keeps on giving.
I feel my entire life is the outcome of Kindness. The people I have met along the way who have listened, held and encouraged me have all played a significant role in enabling me to become the person I am. (Any of the faulty bits are my doing and I keep working on those !!)
I would like to share an example of how kind people are by introducing you to an Artist today who’s work my family have admired for the last 15 years or so. Neil Davies, is a highly acclaimed, professional Artist in St Ives, Cornwall. His energetic, colourful paintings are fascinating studies of Cornish landscapes and coastlines. His work is exhibited at the prestigious New Craftsmen Gallery in St Ives. His shows are always a sell out.
Neil and I became acquainted a few years ago when I reached out to him and enquired about his creative process and confident colour palette. We chatted about our work and the hurdles and highs but more importantly the drive, motivation and endurance of Artists.
After 2 recent, sad, family bereavements in a short space of time the only person that wasn’t expecting to be so affected was me. I knew grief! ‘I could handle this’ I kept thinking. Just as well that our bodies have a clever way of closing down when they can’t bear any more. All avenues of creativity shut down.
Still in denial that grief could have caused this huge absence in creativity that i was experiencing I plundered on. Afterall creativity was my happy place not just work. It’s who I am. It’s how I make sense of the world and how I communicate. I was lost!
As the weeks passed and nothing was changing I thought about what was lacking. Confidence was a big thing. When you can’t achieve something and you don’t understand why you begin to doubt yourself. Furthermore, I couldn’t seem to see things like I had previously. It was like I was looking without noticing anything. Now for an artist that is fundamental. We don’t just look we interpret, explore, consider and look again and if lucky we begin creating.
I got in touch with Neil Davies in early December 2023 as I couldn’t imagine starting a new year so low. We made plans to work together in January and the rest is history🥰.
Neil Davies is a very kind, knowledgeable, thoughtful and yes I believe an extraordinary Artist. He respected the grieving process much more than i had and he gave me space, time and opportunity to regain my confidence.
We worked with oils and we shared techniques and process. We walked, we looked and explored our favourite subject ie. the coastline and let the creative block dilute in Kindness.
Such an act of kindness was so powerful that it makes you wonder what the world could look like if Kindness was at the core of everything.
I took a few photos of the Master at work as he had such a thoughtful, calmness about him I wanted to remember it. I learnt so much thank you Neil and for your lovely family who shared you.
